GPEP offers a college education to students in prison not because there is something broken in them that needs to be repaired, but because there is huge potential in them waiting to be unlocked. The intangible value of a GPEP education is best expressed by those who have earned it.

鈥淭he culture at GPEP is like what Greek scholars had. We would come together to talk about ideas鈥攊n class and outside of class. We wanted to think and be creative and share ideas with each other. The camaraderie of the GPEP students was special鈥攚e were a real community. I miss that.鈥�

The Investment

  • $10,500鈥攁nnual cost to educate a GPEP student

The Return

  • The cost savings to taxpayers of $4-5 for each each dollar spent on educational programming behind bars.
  • The wisdom of investing $10,500 annually to educate a GPEP student--when it costs Maryland $60,000 to incarcerate a person for one year.
  • The impact of education on recidivism. While the recidivism rate for the overall prison population is 76.6%, for those enrolled in a bachelor's program it is just 5.6%. This is especially important when we consider that 95% of those in prison will ultimately come home.
  • Critically, college in prison students help disrupt cycles of incarceration, inspire other family members to pursue their own academic endeavors, and become change agents in their community upon release . At 黄色软件抖阴, two undergraduates on our campus in Towson are the children of former GPEP students.
  • Priceless: Providing GPEP students with the opportunity to realize their value as scholars and citizens.
